In a significant move for Kentucky football, quarterback Zach Calzada has committed to the Wildcats for the 2025 season, filling a crucial need for depth at the position. The announcement comes after a whirlwind transfer portal journey, where Kentucky targeted Calzada, alongside Maalik Murphy, to solidify their quarterback room.
Calzada, a former Texas A&M and Auburn QB, is no stranger to high-level competition. The 6-foot-3 signal-caller made an instant impact during the 2021 season at Texas A&M, stepping in as the starter after Haynes King’s injury. He led the Aggies to a memorable 8-4 record, throwing for 2,185 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. His standout performance came against No. 1 Alabama, where Calzada engineered a stunning 41-38 upset victory, throwing for 285 yards and three touchdowns.
After transferring to Auburn in 2022, injuries and stiff competition kept Calzada from securing a starting role. Seeking more playing time, he transferred to Incarnate Word in 2023, where he thrived, throwing for 3,744 yards, 35 touchdowns, and just nine interceptions. His impressive performance with the FCS program reminded the college football world of his talent and leadership ability.
With Beau Allen’s graduation and Gavin Wimsatt’s transfer, Kentucky was down to just four quarterbacks: Brock Vandagriff, Cutter Boley, Stone Saunders, and Brennen Ward. With Vandagriff set to retire, Calzada’s commitment provides a much-needed boost to the Wildcats’ quarterback depth.
If Calzada can replicate the form that made him a standout at Texas A&M and Incarnate Word, Kentucky fans can look forward to an exciting quarterback battle in 2025. The Wildcats have found their signal-caller for the future, and Calzada is ready to make an impact in the SEC once again.
