Florida State’s wide receiver position took a hit on January 8th, as transfer portal target Traylon Ray committed to Ole Miss, leaving the Seminoles to adjust their strategy for 2025. Ray, who had visited FSU earlier in January, is recovering from an injury suffered in November, and while his potential was evident, concerns over his health may have influenced the Seminoles’ decision not to push for his commitment.
FSU entered the 2025 transfer portal with a clear need for proven wide receivers, especially after struggling in the previous year with unproven talent. The Seminoles had hoped Ray, a former West Virginia standout, could provide immediate help. However, after a series of visits to other schools, Ray ultimately chose Ole Miss, signaling that FSU had turned its attention to other options.
The Seminoles had already secured commitments from two highly regarded transfer receivers: former five-star prospect Duce Robinson and former Tennessee player Squirrel White. Robinson, a legacy recruit, committed before the New Year, while White’s commitment on January 5th solidified FSU’s receiver corps for the upcoming season. With these two additions, FSU coaches were less inclined to pursue Ray or Appalachian State’s Kaedin Robinson further, as their focus shifted to building depth and development at the position.
Despite Ray’s departure, FSU’s receiver room remains promising, with a mix of proven talent and young potential. The group includes rising stars like Hykeem Williams, Jordan Scott, Lawayne McCoy, and a host of freshmen expected to contribute in 2025, including Jayvan Boggs and Tae’shaun Gelsey. The Seminoles also have depth with JUCO transfers and other developing players on the roster.
While Traylon Ray’s decision to commit to Ole Miss may have initially seemed like a blow, FSU’s strategy now focuses on a balanced mix of experience and development. With key additions in the portal and the continued growth of younger players, the Seminoles are poised to weather the storm at wide receiver and remain competitive in the upcoming season.
