Scott Davenport, a Louisville basketball icon, is stepping away after 20 years at the helm of Bellarmine University’s program. The Derby City native has left an indelible mark on Kentucky basketball, with coaching stints at Louisville under Denny Crum and Rick Pitino, a successful tenure at Ballard High School, and a transformative run at Bellarmine.
Davenport took over Bellarmine’s Division II program and quickly turned it into a powerhouse. By his fourth season, the Knights made the postseason, and in 2011, they captured the national championship. Under his leadership, Bellarmine made three additional Final Four appearances (2012, 2015, 2017).
In 2020-21, Bellarmine transitioned to Division I, and just two years later, Davenport led the team to an ASUN Conference Tournament title. However, due to transition rules, the Knights were ineligible for an NCAA Tournament bid. Despite that setback, Davenport’s legacy remains strong, as he amassed 423 wins during his tenure.
Though he’s stepping away, the Davenport name isn’t leaving Bellarmine. His son, Doug Davenport, has been named the head coach in waiting, ensuring the program stays in the family.
With Scott Davenport’s departure, the Knights enter a new era—who will carry the torch and build on his legacy?
