Doug Gottlieb, known for his work in sports media, took on a new challenge as the head coach of Green Bay for the 2024-25 season. Despite staying active in broadcasting, including hosting The Doug Gottlieb Show, his coaching tenure did not go as planned. The Phoenix ended the season with a 4-28 record, including a first-round exit in the Horizon League Tournament.
Green Bay started with some promise, securing an early win over SIUE, which later won the OVC title. However, the team struggled immensely, enduring a brutal 21-game losing streak before finally defeating Wright State on Feb. 16. They managed one more victory against Detroit Mercy before the season ended.
Ranked No. 334 out of 364 Division I teams by KenPom, Green Bay was among the worst in college basketball. Balancing his media commitments with coaching left little flexibility in his schedule, making it difficult to turn things around. Unlike J.J. Redick, who fully transitioned from media to coaching, Gottlieb attempted to do both, and the results were poor.
Previously a prominent NCAA Tournament analyst, Gottlieb will now be watching March Madness from the sidelines. His future in coaching remains uncertain, but based on his first season, he may be better suited for radio than the bench.
