Otega Oweh continues to cement his legacy as a clutch performer for Kentucky, delivering yet another game-winning performance. In a heart-pounding SEC Tournament matchup, the Wildcats edged past Oklahoma 85-84 in Nashville, thanks to Oweh’s heroics. The junior guard, a former Oklahoma transfer, once again proved to be the Sooners’ kryptonite, just as he had in their February encounter.
This time, Oweh’s game-winning play came after Kentucky nearly squandered a double-digit lead in the closing moments. With just 1:20 remaining, the Wildcats held an 80-70 advantage, seemingly in control. However, a flurry of turnovers and a furious Oklahoma rally saw Kentucky’s lead evaporate. The Sooners took an 84-83 lead with under six seconds left, and the pressure was on.
Enter Otega Oweh.
In the clutch, Oweh embodied the “next play mentality” preached by head coach Mark Pope. Driving to the basket with confidence, he converted the game-winning layup, igniting a roar from Big Blue Nation and securing Kentucky’s place in the next round.
“We always talk about staying present,” Oweh said postgame. “I knew I had to step up for my team, especially after those turnovers. I’m just glad we came out on top.”
Oweh finished the game with 27 points on an efficient 14 field goal attempts, leading Kentucky’s offense alongside Koby Brea (22 points) and Andrew Carr (11 points). The Wildcats shot 63.9% from two-point range and dominated the paint with 42 points, but late-game turnovers nearly derailed their efforts.
Oklahoma’s freshman star Jeremiah Fears shone with 28 points, but his efforts, along with 33 bench points, weren’t enough to overcome Kentucky’s resilience. The Sooners made 36% of their three-point attempts, but their lack of offensive rebounds and struggles in the paint proved costly.
For Kentucky, the win is another testament to their grit and determination, especially without injured star guard Lamont Butler. Coach Pope praised Oweh and the team’s resilience, saying, “Otega’s growth this season has been incredible. He’s a warrior, just like this whole team.”
With momentum on their side, Kentucky advances to face Alabama in the quarterfinals. While challenges lie ahead, one thing is certain: Otega Oweh is a name opponents won’t soon forget.
