For the second time in just over two weeks, Otega Oweh delivered a jaw-dropping, game-winning shot to crush his former team, Oklahoma. In an electrifying SEC Tournament opener at Bridgestone Arena, the Wildcats edged the Sooners 85-84 thanks to Oweh’s incredible last-second heroics, cementing his place in Big Blue Nation lore.
With six seconds left on the clock and Kentucky trailing by one, the play was clear: get the ball to Oweh and let him work his magic. The junior guard dashed down the court, maneuvered past defenders, and launched an acrobatic left-handed floater from the baseline—almost behind the backboard. Against all odds, the ball dropped through the net, sending the Kentucky faithful into a frenzy.
“I wanted it bad,” Oweh admitted after the game. “Coach drew up the play to get me downhill and make a play.”
The miraculous basket was the cherry on top of an already stellar performance. Oweh finished with 27 points, five assists, four rebounds, and three steals in 36 minutes. His second-half dominance, scoring 16 points, was pivotal in keeping Kentucky afloat during Oklahoma’s relentless comeback.
In the locker room, Oweh’s teammates were still processing what had happened.
“It was just crazy, seeing it go in with the left hand,” said Brandon Garrison. “I was just in shock.”
Koby Brea, who had a front-row seat to Oweh’s brilliance, added, “Honestly, I’m still in disbelief. He keeps surprising us every single day.”
Kentucky head coach Mark Pope praised Oweh’s ability to rise in critical moments. “He’s a special player who thrives under pressure. We’re lucky to have him.”
This was not the first time Oweh broke Oklahoma’s heart. In their regular-season clash on February 26, he scored Kentucky’s final 18 points, including another game-winner. Thursday night’s encore solidified his reputation as a clutch performer and added another chapter to his already impressive story.
The Wildcats now advance to face Alabama in the quarterfinals, but Oweh’s heroics will be remembered long after the tournament ends. As teammate Collin Chandler put it, “Just give the ball to Otega and get out of the way.”
With Oweh leading the charge, Kentucky fans have every reason to believe the magic is just beginning.
