The University of Florida has cleared men’s basketball coach Todd Golden after a four-month Title IX investigation into allegations of sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, and stalking. The university announced Monday that no evidence was found to support the claims, and the investigation has been closed.
This development comes as the No. 5 Florida Gators enjoy their best basketball season in a decade, with an 18-2 record. “The University of Florida takes these matters seriously and works deliberately to ensure that due process is upheld for everyone,” said university spokesman Steve Orlando. “After a thorough investigation, the university found no evidence that Todd Golden violated Title IX.”
Golden, 39, remained focused on the team throughout the process but expressed frustration with the lack of confidentiality surrounding the investigation. Earlier this month, Golden criticized breaches of privacy, stating, “I am just frustrated and disappointed that a Title IX mechanism…continues to be abused.”
The allegations against Golden, first reported in November, included accusations of inappropriate messages and sexual advances on social media. However, Golden’s attorney, William Shepherd, emphasized that the investigation proved the claims were baseless. “Many sought to target Coach Golden and drive their agenda…but the university’s conclusion confirms the complaint was meritless,” Shepherd said.
Despite the challenging circumstances, the University Athletic Association (UAA) stood by Golden, commending his professionalism throughout the investigation. “Coach Golden has demonstrated tremendous focus and professionalism,” the UAA said in a statement.
Golden expressed gratitude for the university and fans’ support in a statement on X. “The last several months have been a challenge for my family and me…but the support from the UAA and our fans has made a huge difference,” he wrote.
The investigation’s conclusion safeguards Golden’s coaching career, secured with a contract extension through 2030 that includes a $4 million annual salary. However, the ongoing Title IX investigation against assistant coach Taurean Green, who faces separate allegations, continues to cast a shadow over the program.
Florida outsources its Title IX investigations to Grand River Solutions, a private firm based in California, ensuring thorough and independent reviews of such cases. As the basketball season progresses, Golden and the Gators aim to keep their focus on the court.
