True freshman Tahaad Pettiford delivered a breakout performance in the NCAA Tournament’s second round, leading the Auburn Tigers to a 78-64 victory over the No. 9 Creighton Bluejays. Pettiford’s stat line—23 points, six rebounds, and three assists—highlighted his poise and ability to thrive in the March Madness spotlight, propelling Auburn into the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2019.
A Freshman Sensation
Pettiford’s impact was felt on both ends of the floor as he played with confidence and composure beyond his years. The young guard set the tone early, attacking the basket aggressively and knocking down key shots when the Tigers needed them most.
“It was a dream come true,” Pettiford said after the game. “You always imagine moments like this as a kid. To step up for my team in such an important game means the world to me.”
In addition to his scoring, Pettiford contributed on the boards and as a playmaker, showing his all-around ability to influence the game. His 23 points led all scorers, underscoring his value to Auburn’s success.
A Team Effort
While Pettiford’s performance stood out, he had plenty of help from his teammates. Chad Baker-Mazara added 17 points, while Denver Jones chipped in 15. Dylan Cardwell anchored the defense, using his size and shot-blocking ability to limit Creighton’s offensive opportunities.
Head coach Bruce Pearl praised Pettiford’s performance, saying, “Tahaad played like a veteran out there. For a freshman to step up on a stage like this is incredible. His energy and focus were contagious, and the whole team fed off it.”
Turning the Page
The Tigers entered the game with something to prove after a lackluster first-round performance against Alabama State. Following a team meeting led by assistant coach Steven Pearl, Auburn came out with renewed energy and focus, executing their game plan to perfection against Creighton.
“We talked about the sacrifices it takes to win at this level,” said Coach Pearl. “Tahaad and the entire team embraced that mindset tonight, and it showed on the court.”
Looking Ahead
Auburn’s next test will come Friday in Atlanta, where they’ll face the Michigan Wolverines in the Sweet Sixteen. With Pettiford emerging as a go-to player, the Tigers have momentum on their side as they aim to keep their tournament run alive.
For Auburn fans, Pettiford’s dazzling display is a glimpse into a bright future. As March Madness continues, the Tigers are proving they belong among the nation’s best.
