Florida Gators’ Coach Todd Golden expressed immense pride following his team’s 79-73 comeback victory over Auburn in the Elite Eight, which propelled them to the national championship game. The Gators are now one win away from securing their third national title in school history.
Golden acknowledged the team’s incredible preparation, effort, and toughness, particularly after a challenging first half. Auburn dominated the paint early, outscoring Florida 13-18 in two-point attempts. At halftime, the team was down by one, but Golden and his staff rallied the players with a message to refocus on their strengths and execute the game plan better.
In the second half, Florida’s defense became more physical, especially in the paint. Golden praised his players for turning up the pressure, leading to key stops and rebounds that shifted the momentum. Their defense kept Auburn’s Johni Broome, a key player, in check, limiting him to just 1-4 shooting in the second half. This improvement in defensive effort helped Florida control the game and go on a decisive run.
Golden highlighted the leadership of senior guards Walter Clayton, Will Richard, and Alijah Martin, who provided stability and confidence to the younger players. Florida’s bench depth, including contributions from Rueben and Condo, was also critical in wearing down Auburn’s defense. This allowed the Gators to execute their game plan with renewed energy in the second half.
Reflecting on the team’s growth, Golden shared his pride in the collective effort, from the coaching staff to the players. He noted the lack of selfishness in the locker room, with everyone focused on winning rather than personal recognition. The victory was especially meaningful as it came on the same day that legendary coach Billy Donovan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Golden expressed admiration for Donovan, noting his lasting impact on Florida basketball.
With the Gators advancing to the national championship, Golden’s focus remains on the final game, where they will face either Duke or Houston, as Florida aims for its third national title.
