Four-star guard Acaden Lewis has officially decommitted from the University of Kentucky, a move that reduces Mark Pope’s 2025 recruiting class to just two high school signees: Jasper Johnson and Malachi Moreno. Ranked No. 32 nationally and No. 5 at his position in the class of 2025, Lewis signed with Kentucky during the early signing period, passing over powerhouse programs like Duke and UConn.
In a statement released through ESPN, Lewis expressed gratitude to the Kentucky staff, particularly Coach Mark Pope, for their belief in him. He emphasized that his decision wasn’t due to any negative experience, but rather a reevaluation of what’s best for his future. “This is not in any way a reflection of any negative feelings towards Coach Pope and Kentucky,” Lewis said. “I appreciate your understanding and am excited for what the future holds.”
Lewis had previously expressed enthusiasm about being a point guard at Kentucky, calling it a rare and meaningful opportunity. He praised Pope and his staff’s knowledge, dedication, and league experience — traits he believed would help him prepare for the next level.
With Lewis’ departure, Kentucky’s recruiting outlook shifts. The Wildcats are expected to lean on transfer portal additions like Kam Williams, Jaland Lowe, Mo Dioubate, and Jayden Quaintance. Veterans such as Otega Oweh, Brandon Garrison, Collin Chandler, Trent Noah, and Travis Perry could also return with eligibility remaining, giving Kentucky some depth and experience heading into next season.
Still, the decommitment leaves a gap in the backcourt, particularly at the backup point guard spot. Coach Pope is now expected to pursue additional talent from the transfer portal, especially a shot-making wing and a floor general to help round out the roster. While Lewis’ exit is a blow to the future plans, Kentucky remains well-positioned with a strong returning core and promising newcomers.
As the Wildcats pivot, the focus now turns to recruiting a suitable replacement for Lewis, with the hope of reinforcing the team’s depth and stability before the 2025–26 season tips off.
