The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has officially named the volleyball arena at the Bob Devaney Sports Center after legendary coach John Cook. The facility will now be known as John Cook Arena, honoring Cook’s extraordinary 25-year career as head coach of Nebraska Volleyball.
Cook retired in January after a historic run that saw the Huskers secure four national championships, 12 NCAA Semifinal appearances, and 14 conference titles. With a career record of 883-176 (.834), Cook ranks fifth all-time in winning percentage for Division I volleyball coaches. His 722-103 record at Nebraska represents the best winning percentage (.875) for any DI program over the last 25 years.
Under Cook’s leadership, Nebraska Volleyball became a powerhouse on and off the court. Since moving to the Devaney Center in 2013, the Huskers have led the nation in attendance every year, filling the 8,309-seat venue with passionate fans. This unparalleled support helped solidify Nebraska’s reputation as the epicenter of collegiate volleyball.
In addition to renaming the arena, the project includes a life-size bronze statue of Cook, which will be placed on the north side of the Devaney Sports Center. The statue, created by Nebraska native and nationally renowned artist George Lundeen, will be a lasting tribute to Cook’s legacy.
“John’s success as the leader of our volleyball program is unmatched,” said Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen. “His impact extends beyond the court, touching our university, community, and the entire state. This honor ensures his legacy will be celebrated for generations to come.”
The court inside John Cook Arena will retain the name Terry Pettit Court, recognizing Cook’s Hall of Fame predecessor. The overall complex will continue to be called the Bob Devaney Sports Center, named after the legendary Nebraska football coach and athletic director.
“This is an incredible honor. I am truly humbled by all of it,” Cook said. “Nebraska has always been special, and I’m grateful to be part of this remarkable legacy. There truly is no place like Nebraska.”
The John Cook Arena signage and statue will be unveiled later this year, celebrating Cook’s unparalleled contributions to Nebraska Volleyball.
