Lamar Wilkerson, one of Kentucky’s top remaining transfer portal targets, has committed to Indiana after considering both Kentucky and the Hoosiers. The 6’5” senior guard from Sam Houston State, known for his shooting prowess, averaged 20.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game in the 2024-25 season, shooting an impressive 44.5% from three. After official visits to both schools, Wilkerson chose Indiana, saying that it felt like home.
Wilkerson expressed that his decision was influenced by the opportunity to be a key player at Indiana, something he didn’t feel would be the case at Kentucky, where he feared becoming just another piece on a loaded roster. He appreciated the attention he received from Indiana’s coaching staff, especially Coach Darian DeVries, who flew out to see him one last time before his decision. “I’m ready to bring Hoosier basketball back,” Wilkerson said, highlighting his confidence in the program’s future under DeVries.
Before narrowing his choice to Kentucky and Indiana, Wilkerson had considered other programs like Auburn, Ole Miss, and Arkansas. He canceled all remaining visits to focus on making his final decision between the two finalists. Despite Kentucky’s recruitment, Wilkerson ultimately decided to take his talents to Bloomington.
This commitment marks a loss for Kentucky, which had heavily prioritized Wilkerson after missing out on other transfer targets like Wesley Yates III and Jaron Pierre Jr. Wilkerson’s decision leaves Kentucky in a difficult position as they now search for new options to fill the void left by the standout guard. Coach Mark Pope and his staff must now turn their attention to other players in the transfer portal, hoping to land another key contributor to the roster ahead of the 2025-26 season.
With Wilkerson’s commitment to Indiana, the Wildcats will need to reassess their transfer strategy as they continue to build their roster for the upcoming season. Kentucky’s pursuit of talent remains ongoing, and the team will look to make big moves to strengthen their lineup.
