University of Tennessee men’s basketball coach Rick Barnes has announced the signing of highly-rated guard Troy Henderson, a standout from Chester, Virginia. Henderson, a four-time VHSL All-State player, brings a wealth of experience, including two-time Player of the Year honors and three state championships to the Vols’ basketball program.
Henderson, who is known for his toughness and leadership qualities, has been a dominant force on the court. A 6-foot-1, 180-pound point guard, Henderson is recognized as a three-level scorer with excellent range and passing ability. Barnes praised his ability to facilitate and create opportunities for teammates, emphasizing that Henderson’s competitive nature and leadership are qualities the team values highly.
The new recruit boasts an impressive high school career with a remarkable 104-6 record, playing for John Marshall High School in Virginia. Last season, Henderson led his team to a VHSL Class 2 state title, recording 20 points, eight assists, and three steals in the championship game. His senior year statistics included 13.7 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game, contributing significantly to his team’s 25-2 record.
Before transferring to John Marshall, Henderson attended Lancaster High School, where he also excelled, earning Northern Neck District Player of the Year honors in all three of his seasons. He was a key player in leading Lancaster to two VHSL Class 1 state titles. In his junior year, he averaged 25.9 points per game, further showcasing his scoring prowess.
Henderson’s decision to join the Volunteers follows a shift in his recruiting path after a coaching change at Fordham, where he had originally signed. He is the fifth new addition to the Tennessee roster for the 2025-26 season, joining fellow prep signees DeWayne Brown II and Amari Evans, as well as transfers Jaylen Carey and Ja’Kobi Gillespie.
Henderson’s winning pedigree and skill set make him a key addition to the Volunteers as they look to build on their success in the upcoming seasons.
