The Nebraska Cornhuskers are welcoming back a familiar face as Jamarques Lawrence, a talented 6-foot-3 guard, returns to the program after a successful stint at Rhode Island. The New Jersey native, who previously played two seasons for Nebraska, brings experience, versatility, and a sharpshooter’s touch to Fred Hoiberg’s squad.
“We are thrilled to have Jamarques back,” said Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg. “He knows our system, embodies the team-first mentality, and has developed into an even more consistent and impactful player during his time at Rhode Island.”
Lawrence spent the 2024-25 season at Rhode Island, starting all 31 games and averaging 9.9 points, 2.5 assists, and 1.8 rebounds per contest. He led the Rams with 59 three-pointers, shooting 39% from beyond the arc and an impressive 87% from the free-throw line. Among his standout performances were a career-high 20-point effort with four steals against Saint Bonaventure and a 19-point game at Saint Louis, where he hit 5-of-6 three-pointers.
Before his time in Rhode Island, Lawrence played a pivotal role for Nebraska during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons. As a sophomore, he helped lead the Huskers to 23 wins and an NCAA Tournament berth, averaging 6.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. His late-season surge, highlighted by 55% shooting from the field and 52% from deep over Nebraska’s final nine games, underscored his ability to shine in crucial moments.
Lawrence’s return bolsters the Huskers’ backcourt depth, providing a proven scorer and a player who thrives in high-pressure situations. His familiarity with Nebraska’s offensive and defensive systems will ease the transition and allow him to make an immediate impact.
With a mix of youthful talent and experienced contributors like Lawrence, Nebraska is positioning itself for another competitive season under Hoiberg’s guidance. Fans in Lincoln are eager to see the seasoned guard back in action, wearing Husker red and ready to deliver more thrilling performances.
