In a strategic move to bolster their quarterback room, Tennessee Football has secured the commitment of experienced signal-caller Joey Aguilar, a transfer from UCLA and former standout at Appalachian State. Aguilar, who boasts one season of eligibility, arrives at Knoxville with a proven track record and a strong resume, providing a significant boost to the Vols’ offense ahead of the 2025 season.
Aguilar’s transfer comes in the wake of former Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava’s decision to join UCLA. The rare “trade-like” exchange between Tennessee and UCLA sees both programs reshaping their quarterback dynamics. Aguilar’s arrival answers head coach Josh Heupel’s call for a veteran presence in a quarterback room that previously consisted of redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre, with only nine combined collegiate pass attempts.
Aguilar brings considerable experience and accolades to the Vols. Over the past two seasons at Appalachian State, he passed for an impressive 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns, adding another 207 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. In the 2023 season, he broke six single-season passing records for the Mountaineers, including passing yards, touchdowns, and total offense, while leading the team to nine wins. His standout performance earned him the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year title in 2023 and an All-Sun Belt honorable mention in 2024.
Prior to his time at Appalachian State, Aguilar honed his skills at Diablo Valley Community College, where he established himself as a reliable and versatile quarterback. Known for his dual-threat capabilities, Aguilar’s ability to pass with precision and execute on the run makes him an ideal fit for Tennessee’s fast-paced offensive system under Coach Heupel.
“Aguilar fits what Tennessee is looking for—a proven starter with one year to play,” ESPN’s Chris Low noted. “His experience and skill set add depth and leadership to a young quarterback room.”
With Aguilar’s arrival, Tennessee now has three scholarship quarterbacks heading into the season opener against Syracuse on August 30 in Atlanta. The addition of this experienced playmaker positions the Vols for an exciting and competitive 2025 campaign.
