The Florida Gators, fresh off their electrifying 2025 NCAA National Championship win, are gearing up for another dominant season. Head Coach Todd Golden recently provided insight into how rising star Thomas Haugh could play a pivotal role in the team’s quest to repeat history in 2025/26.
Haugh, a versatile 6’9” forward, was instrumental in Florida’s championship run, showcasing his ability to dominate in the paint and stretch defenses with his improving perimeter game. During an appearance on The Field of 68 podcast, Golden hinted at a bold strategy for the upcoming season: positioning Haugh as a “three” — the small forward spot typically reserved for versatile scorers and facilitators in the NBA.
“He’s really maturing into a complete player,” Golden stated. “He can score inside, stretch it out from three, and his playmaking ability as a frontcourt player is special. We’re going to play him more at the three this year.”
Traditionally, college teams lack the size and depth to implement true NBA-style lineups. However, Golden envisions Haugh’s transition to small forward as a game-changer, allowing the Gators to adopt an NBA-like approach. Pairing Haugh at the three with Alex Condon at power forward and either Rueben Chinyelu or Micah Handlogten at center could make Florida one of the most physically imposing teams in college basketball.
