— Former Kentucky basketball star Sean Woods is officially returning to the sidelines this summer—but this time, he’s leading a new kind of Wildcat team. Woods has been named head coach of La Familia, the University of Kentucky’s official alumni squad competing in the 2025 edition of The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a high-stakes, winner-take-all competition with a $1 million prize on the line.
After serving as an assistant coach for La Familia during their impressive semifinal run last year, Woods now takes over as head coach with his sights set on going all the way. A key member of Kentucky’s legendary “Unforgettables” squad in the early ’90s, Woods brings not only deep basketball experience but also a lasting connection to Big Blue Nation (BBN).
“It’s an honor to lead this group of guys who proudly represent the University of Kentucky,” Woods said. “We’re not just playing for ourselves—we’re playing for the fans, the legacy, and the Commonwealth.”
La Familia’s 2025 roster is loaded with familiar names from Kentucky’s recent basketball history. Headliners include the Harrison twins (Andrew and Aaron), Willie Cauley-Stein, Doron Lamb, and defensive standout DeAndre Liggins. With a mix of NBA and overseas experience, the team is poised to be one of the most competitive in this summer’s tournament.
The Lexington Regional will be hosted at the historic Memorial Coliseum from July 18–22, bringing top-tier basketball back to campus and giving UK fans a chance to rally around their former stars. TBT’s unique format features Elam Ending rules, intense single-elimination matchups, and national TV coverage—offering a summer spectacle for hoops fans.
La Familia’s mission is more than just basketball. The team represents a brotherhood built on shared history, mutual respect, and Wildcat pride. With Woods at the helm, they’ll blend old-school toughness with the elite athleticism that Kentucky basketball is known for.
