Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo has been named the 2025 Big Ten Coach of the Year, marking the fourth time he has received this prestigious honor. At 70 years old, Izzo becomes the oldest recipient of the award since its inception in 1977.
In his 30th season at the helm, Izzo led the Spartans to a remarkable 26–5 overall record and a 17–3 mark in the Big Ten Conference, securing the program’s 11th regular-season conference title under his leadership. This achievement ties him with legendary coaches Bob Knight and Ward Lambert for the most Big Ten regular-season titles in history.
The 2024–25 season was particularly notable as Michigan State exceeded expectations, having been predicted to finish fifth in the conference during preseason polls. Despite losing their top three scorers from the previous year, the Spartans clinched the Big Ten title by a three-game margin, setting a school record for most conference wins in a single season.
Izzo’s milestone-filled season also saw him surpass Bob Knight for the most Big Ten Conference victories, recording his 354th win with a triumph over Illinois on February 15. This accomplishment further cements his legacy as one of college basketball’s most successful coaches.
Under Izzo’s guidance, Michigan State extended its streak to 27 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, the longest active streak in Division I men’s basketball. The Spartans advanced to the Elite Eight, marking the 16th time they’ve reached the Sweet Sixteen during Izzo’s tenure.
Reflecting on the season, Izzo attributed the team’s success to collective effort, stating, “You don’t win these without your staff and your players; they win the award.” His commitment to team-oriented play and player development continues to define his coaching philosophy.
As Izzo adds another accolade to his storied career, his impact on Michigan State basketball and college basketball at large remains profound. With a career record of 733–300 and a national championship in 2000, his dedication to excellence and integrity continues to inspire players and fans alike.
