In a landmark achievement that marks a new era for the program, the Virginia Tech softball team has claimed the No. 1 spot in the latest Softball America Top 25 Poll — the first time in program history the Hokies have reached the pinnacle of national rankings.
The historic ranking follows a dominant stretch of performances from the Hokies, who have demonstrated consistency, skill, and resilience throughout the season. Led by head coach Pete D’Amour, Virginia Tech has built a reputation for elite-level pitching, aggressive offense, and a deep, cohesive roster that continues to deliver under pressure.
“This is a special moment for our program, our players, and the entire Virginia Tech community,” said Coach D’Amour. “We’ve worked hard to build something here, and while our focus remains on each game ahead, this recognition is a testament to the work these women have put in day in and day out.”
Virginia Tech’s rise to the top of the poll was propelled by a series of high-profile victories against top-ranked opponents over the past few weeks. Most recently, the Hokies completed back-to-back series sweeps against ranked teams, showcasing both their explosive offense and lights-out pitching. Junior ace pitcher Emma Lemley has been instrumental in the team’s success, recording double-digit strikeouts in multiple outings and anchoring one of the nation’s most formidable pitching staffs.
Offensively, the Hokies have seen breakout performances from sophomore slugger Addison Barnard and senior captain Kelsey Bennett, both of whom have played key roles in producing runs and energizing the dugout. Virginia Tech ranks among the top five nationally in team batting average, home runs, and on-base percentage.
The No. 1 ranking not only reflects the team’s current dominance but also underscores the program’s sustained growth in recent years. Since Coach D’Amour took the helm in 2019, Virginia Tech has steadily climbed the national ranks, making deep postseason runs and establishing itself as a powerhouse in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
As the postseason approaches, the Hokies remain focused on their ultimate goal — a national championship. But for now, the team and its fans can celebrate a historic milestone that affirms Virginia Tech’s place among college softball’s elite.
“This is just the beginning,” said Bennett. “We’re proud, but we’re hungry for more.”
