In an electrifying performance that stunned audiences and judges alike, the West Virginia University (WVU) Cheerleading Squad has been crowned the “World’s Best” by ESPN. The recognition comes in the wake of their jaw-dropping routine at the 2025 International Cheerleading Championship held in Orlando, Florida — a performance that shattered multiple records and captivated millions across the globe.
The WVU squad, known for its athleticism, precision, and high-flying stunts, delivered a flawless 3-minute routine packed with complex tumbling passes, synchronized pyramids, and intricate choreography. Their routine earned a near-perfect score, breaking the highest technical difficulty rating ever recorded in the competition’s history. ESPN analysts and cheer experts hailed it as “the most complete cheerleading performance ever witnessed on a world stage.”
Led by head coach Lindsay McGraw, the team has spent over a year crafting the routine, pushing the limits of physical endurance, creativity, and team coordination. “We knew we had something special, but we never expected to make history like this,” McGraw said. “Our athletes poured their hearts into every second of that performance.”
The crowd at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex erupted into cheers as WVU executed a never-before-seen synchronized aerial flip involving all 20 team members — a move now dubbed “The Mountain State Spiral” by fans and commentators. Within hours, the video of the routine went viral, amassing over 50 million views across social media platforms.
In addition to being awarded the “World’s Best” title, the squad also received the ESPN “Pinnacle Performance” Award and broke three Guinness World Records — for highest synchronized basket toss, most consecutive full-up double downs, and fastest team pyramid assembly.
Governor Jim Justice praised the team’s accomplishment, calling it “a moment of pride for all West Virginians.” He declared May 28 “WVU Cheer Day” across the state in honor of their historic achievement.
As ESPN’s cameras rolled, interviews with emotional team members revealed a deep sense of unity and dedication. Senior captain Brianna Coleman summed it up best: “We didn’t do it just for ourselves. We did it for our school, our state, and everyone who believed in us.”
With this victory, the WVU Cheerleading Squad has secured its place in history — not just as champions, but as legends in the world of competitive cheerleading.
