The Kentucky basketball community mourns the loss of one of its beloved former players, Ray Mills. The Manchester, Kentucky native passed away on May 17, 2025, at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy cherished by Wildcats fans and basketball enthusiasts alike.
Mills played for the University of Kentucky from 1954 to 1957 under the legendary coach Adolph Rupp. He began his collegiate journey on the freshman team, where his impressive scoring and rebounding skills helped lead the Wildcats to an undefeated season. Over the next three years, he continued to make an impact, recording 262 points and 316 rebounds in 67 games. During his tenure, Kentucky captured two SEC titles and made memorable runs to one Sweet 16 and two Elite Eight appearances, establishing themselves as a dominant force in college basketball.
Before his time at Kentucky, Mills was a standout at Clay County High School. He earned All-State Honorable Mention honors in 1952 and First Team All-State recognition in 1953. A true leader on and off the court, Mills guided his team to its first regional championship and scored over 1,000 career points, catching the eye of Coach Rupp.
Following his successful college career, Mills served his country in the National Guard before dedicating himself to coaching. He impacted young athletes at Wayne County High School, Roosevelt Junior High, and Hamilton High School. His contributions to basketball and his communities earned him a place in multiple halls of fame, including the Dawahares-KHSAA Hall of Fame and the Clay County High School Hall of Fame.
Mills’ influence extended beyond the court, touching the lives of countless individuals in Kentucky and beyond. His alma mater, UK Athletics, expressed their condolences on social media, saying, “Once a Wildcat, always a Wildcat. Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Ray Mills.”
The legacy of Ray Mills lives on through his achievements and the lives he touched throughout his storied career. As the Big Blue Nation remembers this remarkable athlete and individual, we send heartfelt thoughts to his loved ones.
