In a historic achievement for Nebraska women’s basketball, senior center Alexis Markowski has been named the 2025 Sporting News National Player of the Year, solidifying her status as one of the most dominant players in college basketball.
Markowski’s stellar season was marked by impressive statistics, averaging 16.8 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. Her leadership propelled the Cornhuskers to a 19-10 overall record and a 10-8 mark in Big Ten play. Notably, she delivered a career-high 35-point, 15-rebound performance in an overtime victory against Oregon on February 19 .
Throughout her collegiate career, Markowski amassed 1,902 points and 1,220 rebounds, becoming the first player in Nebraska history to surpass both 1,900 points and 1,200 rebounds . She also set a school record with 51 career double-doubles .
Her accolades include being a two-time First Team All-Big Ten selection and earning Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors in 2022 . Off the court, Markowski was recognized for her academic excellence, being a three-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and participating in the WBCA “So You Want To Be A Coach” program .
Markowski’s journey is deeply rooted in Nebraska, following in the footsteps of her father, Andy Markowski, who played for the Cornhuskers men’s basketball team from 1994 to 1999 .
