TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State basketball has officially turned a bold new page, and it’s looking a lot like a playbook out of the NBA. The Seminoles have welcomed home a familiar face with serious pedigree: former Seminole standout and two-time NBA champion Luke Loucks has been named the new head coach of the men’s basketball team, and fans have every reason to be buzzing.
Loucks, 34, isn’t just bringing a whistle and a clipboard—he’s bringing the experience of working with some of the NBA’s most elite talent. A former assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr, Loucks was part of the coaching staff that led the Warriors to championship glory. Now, he returns to the place where his basketball journey began with the goal of injecting Florida State with that same championship DNA.
“Coming back to Tallahassee is more than a homecoming,” Loucks said in his introductory press conference. “It’s an opportunity to build something special using everything I’ve learned on the biggest stage.”
Loucks played for FSU from 2008 to 2012 under legendary coach Leonard Hamilton, who recently retired after an illustrious 22-year tenure. Hamilton leaves behind a legacy of excellence and development—especially on the defensive end—and Loucks has made it clear he intends to honor that legacy while steering the team into a faster-paced, modern style of basketball.
Expect a fresh offense built around floor spacing, tempo, and high-volume three-point shooting—elements Loucks absorbed while coaching Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. But it’s not all flash and finesse. Loucks is just as passionate about hard-nosed defense, team chemistry, and player development.
“Luke’s a player’s coach,” said FSU Athletics Director Michael Alford. “He has an incredible basketball mind, but more importantly, he knows how to connect, motivate, and lead. That’s what this program needs as we chart a new path forward.”
With the transfer portal in full swing and recruiting battles heating up, Loucks’ NBA background could be the secret sauce that attracts top-tier talent back to Tallahassee. His ability to offer players a legitimate path to the pros—based on firsthand experience—may become one of FSU’s greatest recruitment tools.
So buckle up, Seminoles fans. The Loucks era has officially begun, and if his past success is any indication, Florida State basketball may soon be, quite literally, Loucks and loaded.
