TALLAHASSEE, Fla. โ Florida State basketball has officially turned a bold new page, and itโs looking a lot like a playbook out of the NBA. The Seminoles have welcomed home a familiar face with serious pedigree: former Seminole standout and two-time NBA champion Luke Loucks has been named the new head coach of the menโs basketball team, and fans have every reason to be buzzing.
Loucks, 34, isnโt just bringing a whistle and a clipboardโheโs bringing the experience of working with some of the NBAโs most elite talent. A former assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors under Steve Kerr, Loucks was part of the coaching staff that led the Warriors to championship glory. Now, he returns to the place where his basketball journey began with the goal of injecting Florida State with that same championship DNA.
โComing back to Tallahassee is more than a homecoming,โ Loucks said in his introductory press conference. โItโs an opportunity to build something special using everything Iโve learned on the biggest stage.โ
Loucks played for FSU from 2008 to 2012 under legendary coach Leonard Hamilton, who recently retired after an illustrious 22-year tenure. Hamilton leaves behind a legacy of excellence and developmentโespecially on the defensive endโand Loucks has made it clear he intends to honor that legacy while steering the team into a faster-paced, modern style of basketball.
Expect a fresh offense built around floor spacing, tempo, and high-volume three-point shootingโelements Loucks absorbed while coaching Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. But itโs not all flash and finesse. Loucks is just as passionate about hard-nosed defense, team chemistry, and player development.
โLukeโs a playerโs coach,โ said FSU Athletics Director Michael Alford. โHe has an incredible basketball mind, but more importantly, he knows how to connect, motivate, and lead. Thatโs what this program needs as we chart a new path forward.โ
With the transfer portal in full swing and recruiting battles heating up, Loucksโ NBA background could be the secret sauce that attracts top-tier talent back to Tallahassee. His ability to offer players a legitimate path to the prosโbased on firsthand experienceโmay become one of FSUโs greatest recruitment tools.
So buckle up, Seminoles fans. The Loucks era has officially begun, and if his past success is any indication, Florida State basketball may soon be, quite literally, Loucks and loaded.
