Michigan State University head coach Tom Izzo has been named the 2025 College Basketball Philanthropy Icon, a prestigious honor recognizing his enduring humanitarian impact and transformative generosity across the Lansing and Mid-Michigan communities.
While Izzo’s legendary coaching careerโhighlighted by a national championship, eight Final Four appearances, and a record-breaking 354 Big Ten victoriesโhas solidified his status as one of college basketballโs greats, it is his off-court dedication to service that continues to inspire.
In 2019, Izzo and his wife Lupe founded The Izzo Legacy, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization designed to formalize their commitment to community enrichment. The centerpiece of their philanthropic efforts is the annual Izzo Legacy Run/Walk/Roll, which has grown into the largest 5K event in Mid-Michigan. The 2024 race drew over 5,000 participants and raised more than $40,000 for local charities, including MSU Safe Place, Holy Cross Services, and The Davies Project .
To ensure lasting impact, the Izzos established the Izzo Legacy Endowment Fund at the Capital Region Community Foundation. This fund has raised nearly $700,000 since its inception, supporting a wide range of nonprofit organizations across the region .
โTom and I have always believed in the importance of giving back to the community that has given us so much,โ Lupe Izzo shared. โThe Izzo Legacy provides us with an opportunity to formalize our commitment to making a difference and to inspire others to join us in this noble pursuitโ .
Beyond fundraising, Izzo’s compassion is evident in personal gestures. In January 2025, he wore custom Coaches vs. Cancer sneakers signed by patients at UM Health Sparrow, using the moment to inspire his players and honor those battling cancer .
His leadership during times of crisis has also been notable. Following the tragic 2023 campus shooting, Izzo played a central role in the university’s healing process, delivering a heartfelt speech at a campus vigil and offering unwavering support to students and families .
In recognition of his extensive public service, former Michigan Governor Jim Blanchard awarded Izzo the Spartan Statesmanship Award in 2024, highlighting his contributions both on and off the court .
As Izzo continues to lead the Spartans, his legacy transcends basketball, embodying a profound commitment to community, compassion, and lasting positive change.
