— The University of Kentucky cheerleading team, revered as the most decorated program in college cheer history with an unmatched 24 national titles, is making headlines once again — but not for adding another trophy to their already crowded case. In a move that has left fans, alumni, and the competitive cheerleading world stunned, the Wildcats have announced plans to transition from the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) circuit to an independent international exhibition tour starting in 2026.
After decades of dominance under the UCA, where Kentucky built an unparalleled legacy marked by precision, athleticism, and spirit, the decision marks a bold new chapter. According to Head Coach Whitney Hollman, the move is intended to elevate the brand of Kentucky Cheer beyond traditional competition and into a more global and culturally impactful space.
“Our mission has always been to push the boundaries of what cheerleading can be,” Hollman said in a statement. “We’ve conquered the UCA stage — now it’s time to bring Kentucky Cheer to the world.”
The new initiative, dubbed UK Global Spirit Tour, will include performances, clinics, and cultural exchanges in over 15 countries, including Japan, Brazil, Germany, and South Africa. The squad will showcase advanced cheer techniques, partner stunts, and sideline entertainment, serving as ambassadors for the sport.
University officials noted that the decision was made in coordination with student-athletes and alumni. Though no longer competing for UCA titles, the team will maintain its role supporting UK Athletics, especially during football and basketball seasons. Scholarships, training schedules, and recruitment will remain unchanged.
Still, the announcement sparked mixed reactions. Die-hard fans voiced concern about the team stepping away from competition, while others celebrated the evolution as a pioneering move for the sport. Former captain Haley Bryant called it “a powerful step forward that honors our past while embracing a future of global influence.”
Meanwhile, UCA released a brief statement expressing gratitude for the decades-long partnership and wishing the team success.
The Wildcats’ final UCA performance is expected in January 2026, promising to be both a farewell and a tribute to their historic run. While the chapter at UCA may be closing, the University of Kentucky cheerleading legacy appears poised to write a bold, international sequel — one that just might change the way the world sees cheerleading.
