Deseria Creighton-Barney, Class of 1986, has built a career defined by transformative leadership and unwavering dedication to service. As the first Black woman to serve as president of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association board of directors, she has consistently opened doors for others, championing inclusivity and equity.
Her leadership extends across multiple sectors, including her roles at the Virginia Tech Foundation and the Boundless Impact Campaign, where she played a pivotal role in advancing strategic initiatives that benefit both students and the broader university community.
Creighton-Barney also serves as the director of human resources for Surry County, Virginia, where her commitment to public service continues to flourish. Known for her mentorship and advocacy, she has inspired countless young professionals and Hokies to pursue their goals with courage and resilience. Her enduring connection to Virginia Tech and her impact on her local community make her a living embodiment of the university’s values.
Mark Lawrence: A Champion of Health and Community
Mark Lawrence, Class of 1980, has dedicated his career to improving health care accessibility and fostering community development. As vice president of governmental and external affairs for Carilion Clinic, Lawrence has been instrumental in advocating for policies that enhance health care quality across Virginia and beyond.
Lawrence’s leadership played a significant role in the creation of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute, institutions that have elevated the university’s reputation as a hub for medical education and research.
Beyond his professional achievements, Lawrence is deeply engaged in his community, mentoring young leaders, volunteering, and championing initiatives that uplift the Hokie Spirit. His collaborative approach and dedication to service have left a lasting impact on both Virginia Tech and the broader region.
