In a moment that blends legacy, leadership, and love for the game, former Nebraska Cornhuskers football coach Tom Osborne has been awarded the National Football Foundation (NFF) Gold Medal, the highest individual honor presented by the organization. This prestigious recognition celebrates not only Osborne’s legendary success on the field but also his profound and lasting impact on college football, sportsmanship, and American athletics.

Osborne, now 87, is no stranger to accolades. With a coaching record of 255–49–3 and three national championships, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college football history. However, the NFF Gold Medal goes beyond wins and titles. It recognizes Osborne’s integrity, character, and contribution to the broader landscape of the sport, including his mentorship, educational impact, and commitment to the student-athlete ideal.

“This award is not just about football,” said Steve Hatchell, President and CEO of the National Football Foundation. “It’s about a man who used football as a platform to teach life lessons, build character, and leave a legacy far beyond the scoreboard. Coach Osborne is the embodiment of what this medal represents.”

Osborne’s influence extends well beyond the gridiron. After retiring from coaching, he served as a U.S. Congressman and later returned to Nebraska as the university’s Athletic Director, helping stabilize and elevate the athletics program during a crucial period. His TeamMates Mentoring Program, co-founded with his wife Nancy, has impacted thousands of young lives across multiple states, offering academic support and personal mentorship to at-risk youth.

In his acceptance remarks, Osborne remained humble, crediting his players, coaching staff, family, and the University of Nebraska community. “I’ve been blessed to work with outstanding people throughout my life. This honor really belongs to all of them,” he said.

The NFF Gold Medal puts Osborne in rare company, joining past recipients like U.S. Presidents, military leaders, and iconic figures in sports and business. For Husker Nation, it’s one more reason to celebrate the man who turned Lincoln into the heart of college football greatness.

Congratulations, Coach Osborne—your legacy continues to inspire generations.
