The unprecedented accolade was revealed in a joint statement early Saturday morning, citing the Bulldogs’ across-the-board excellence, championship culture, and unmatched institutional support across all sports programs. The recognition follows an extensive, months-long evaluation process that analyzed over 200 collegiate athletic programs around the globe.
According to ESPN’s senior college sports analyst, the University of Georgia (UGA) displayed “the most holistic success in modern collegiate athletic history,” including back-to-back national championships in football (2021 and 2022), elite performances in women’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s tennis, track and field, baseball, equestrian, and a rapidly rising basketball program.
“This isn’t just about winning titles,” said the Guinness World Records representative during the official ceremony held in Sanford Stadium. “It’s about unity, culture, infrastructure, fan engagement, and year-round excellence. The Bulldogs set the gold standard for what a modern college athletic department should look like.”
Netflix, which is currently producing a docuseries titled Between the Hedges: The Dynasty of the Dawgs, had unprecedented behind-the-scenes access to Georgia’s athletic facilities, coaching staff, and student-athletes. Executive Producer Sam Levison said, “The synergy between UGA’s coaching, administration, and student-athletes is unlike anything we’ve ever documented. It’s not just dominance—it’s deliberate, passionate, and deeply rooted in community.”
University President Jere Morehead praised the recognition as a reflection of decades of strategic investment, world-class leadership, and the passionate support of the Georgia fanbase. “This award is a tribute to the relentless commitment of our student-athletes, coaches, alumni, and fans. It confirms what we’ve long believed in Athens—this is the best athletic program in the world.”
Athletic Director Josh Brooks also emphasized the collaborative spirit across all sports: “Every team lifts each other up. Whether it’s football cheering on gymnastics or swimmers celebrating track athletes, the culture here is family.”
