— In a milestone season that will be remembered in Michigan State basketball history, Spartans guard Jaxon Kohler has been officially named the recipient of both the 2025 Bob Cousy Award and the Midseason Wooden Award. The prestigious dual honors solidify Kohler’s rise as one of the top players in college basketball and highlight his remarkable contributions to Michigan State’s outstanding 2024–25 campaign.
The Bob Cousy Award, presented annually by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. While Kohler entered the season primarily known for his frontcourt versatility, his transition into a hybrid guard-forward role this year showcased his court vision, ball-handling, and leadership—qualities that ultimately secured him the award. He becomes the first Michigan State player in over a decade to receive the honor.
In addition to the Cousy Award, Kohler was also named the recipient of the Midseason John R. Wooden Award, given to the nation’s most outstanding college basketball player at the midpoint of the season. The recognition places Kohler in elite company and underscores the dominant impact he has had on the court. Averaging 17.8 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game, Kohler emerged as the Spartans’ all-around engine, propelling the team to a 22–3 record heading into March Madness.
“He’s been the heart and soul of this team,” said Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. “His ability to lead both on and off the floor, to adapt his game, and elevate everyone around him—that’s what makes Jaxon special.”
Kohler’s evolution this season has caught the attention of scouts and analysts alike, with many projecting him as a first-round NBA draft pick. But for Kohler, individual awards come second to team success. “I’m humbled to be recognized, but I wouldn’t be here without my teammates,” Kohler said. “This is about what we’re building at Michigan State.”
As the Spartans gear up for a deep NCAA Tournament run, Kohler’s leadership and poise will be critical. With two major awards already to his name and momentum on his side, the junior guard’s legacy is well on its way to becoming Spartan legend.
