In a stunning and heartfelt announcement, former Tennessee Vols star quarterback Joshua Dobbs declared he is officially returning to Rocky Top—not just as a mentor, but as a player-coach for the 2025 season. The news sent shockwaves through the college football world and ignited a frenzy among Vols fans who have long considered Dobbs a living legend in Knoxville.
Standing on the 50-yard line of Neyland Stadium surrounded by cheering fans and former teammates, Dobbs took the mic and delivered the now-viral words: “I am back and ready for Rocky Top. This is home. And we’ve got unfinished business.”
Dobbs, 30, has had a journeyman NFL career, including stints with the Steelers, Cardinals, Vikings, and most recently, the 49ers. But his legacy was built in Knoxville, where from 2013 to 2016 he became one of the most beloved quarterbacks in program history—known for his arm, mobility, and intellect, graduating with a degree in aerospace engineering.
Under a new NCAA pilot program allowing former athletes under 32 to re-enroll and compete if they maintain academic eligibility, Dobbs was cleared for a one-year return. But it’s the dual role as quarterback and assistant quarterbacks coach that has everyone talking.
“I’m not here to take anyone’s spot,” Dobbs explained. “I’m here to build leaders, push this team to greatness, and give these young guys everything I’ve learned from the NFL and life.”
Head coach Josh Heupel welcomed the move, calling it “a once-in-a-generation opportunity” for the team. “Dobbs brings wisdom, humility, and fire. This isn’t a gimmick. This is leadership in action,” Heupel said.
The Vols, coming off a rebuilding season, are expected to use Dobbs in special packages while he serves as a mentor to rising QB Tate Norris and incoming freshman phenom Malik Grady.
Fans flooded social media with support. “It’s like Peyton coming back,” one fan tweeted. “The energy in Knoxville is electric.”
Dobbs’s return is expected to boost ticket sales, recruit morale, and national attention for the Vols—just in time for a challenging SEC schedule.
One thing’s for sure: with Dobbs back on Rocky Top, Tennessee’s future just got a whole lot brighter.
