In a move that has Michigan State basketball fans buzzing with excitement and nostalgia, Spartan legend Shawn Respert is officially returning to East Lansing—this time, on the sidelines. Respert, one of the most electrifying scorers in MSU history, is joining Tom Izzo’s coaching staff, marking a powerful homecoming for a player who once lit up the Breslin Center as a player and now looks to do the same as a mentor.
Respert, who played at MSU from 1990 to 1995, left an indelible mark on the program. As the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,531 points, he was known for his lethal three-point shooting, leadership, and clutch performances. He went on to play in the NBA before moving into player development roles with several franchises, including the Houston Rockets and Memphis Grizzlies. Now, he brings his professional experience and Spartan pride back to where it all began.
Head Coach Tom Izzo expressed nothing but joy at Respert’s return. “This is a full-circle moment—not just for Shawn, but for all of us who watched him elevate this program to national recognition. He’s been a role model on and off the court, and now our guys get to learn directly from him.”
Respert’s role will involve player development, shooting coaching, and mentoring the team’s younger guards, especially as MSU looks to reload after key departures and gear up for another deep March Madness run.
Spartan fans didn’t waste a second taking to social media with celebratory memes, nostalgic highlight reels, and emotional shout-outs. One alum posted, “Shawn Respert coming back is like Michael Jordan rejoining the Bulls—except greener!” Another joked, “Hope the Breslin’s got fire insurance—Respert’s jumper might still be hot!”
For Respert, the return is more than a job—it’s a mission. “Michigan State gave me everything,” he said. “It’s an honor to come back and help shape the next generation of Spartans.”
As the program celebrates this powerful reunion, one message rings loud and clear in East Lansing: Go Green, Go White—and welcome back, Coach Respert!
