NEW: Congratulations to Danielle Green, former Michigan State Women’s Basketball player, Iraq war veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, for winning the Pat Tillman Award for Service at the ESPY awards – true Spartan warrior and a beacon of hope and resilience

In an emotional and powerful moment at the 2025 ESPY Awards, Danielle Green, a former Michigan State University women’s basketball standout, Iraq War veteran, and Purple Heart recipient, was honored with the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service. The crowd at the Dolby Theatre erupted in a standing ovation as Green took the stage, a living testament to resilience, sacrifice, and unshakable courage.

Green, a native of Chicago, played for the Michigan State Spartans in the late 1990s, earning praise for her tenacity and leadership on the court. After graduation, she chose a path few athletes take—enlisting in the U.S. Army. In 2004, while serving in Iraq, Green was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade attack, resulting in the loss of her dominant left arm.

Rather than letting tragedy define her, Green transformed it into a mission of service. She earned her master’s degree in counseling and has since worked tirelessly to support wounded veterans and underserved youth, using her story to inspire others to overcome adversity.

“Danielle represents everything this award stands for,” said Marie Tillman, widow of Pat Tillman, the former NFL player turned Army Ranger who was killed in Afghanistan. “Her courage on and off the battlefield, her commitment to others, and her ability to turn hardship into purpose reflect the very spirit of Pat’s legacy.”

In her acceptance speech, Green thanked her fellow veterans, former teammates, and family, and issued a call to action: “We all have the power to serve. Whether on a court, a battlefield, or in our own communities, we can all be a force for good. This isn’t just my award—it belongs to everyone who keeps showing up, no matter how hard the fight.”

Social media buzzed with praise for Green, with the hashtag #SpartanStrong trending throughout the evening. Michigan State University released a statement calling her “a true Spartan warrior and a beacon of hope and resilience.”

Green joins a distinguished list of past recipients of the Pat Tillman Award, given annually to individuals with a strong connection to sports who have served others in a way that echoes Tillman’s legacy.

As the ESPYs celebrated athletic excellence, Danielle Green reminded the world that true greatness often lies in the strength to rise, serve, and inspire—long after the final whistle.
