In a stunning show of allegiance to the Texas Longhorns, assistant coach and Defensive Passing Game Coordinator Duane Akina has turned down an eye-popping $34 million offer from arch-rival Oklahoma Sooners. The offer, which would have made Akina one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college football, underscores the Sooners’ high regard for his expertise. Still, Akina’s decision reflects a deeper commitment to Texas, its culture, and its storied rivalry with Oklahoma.

    A Bold Choice

The Sooners’ offer was as tempting as they come—financial security, expanded responsibilities, and the prestige of joining one of college football’s blueblood programs. Yet, Akina chose to remain in Austin, declaring that his commitment to Texas and the Longhorns extended beyond the game itself.

“Longhorns isn’t just a job—it’s a mission,” Akina said in a statement released by Texas Athletics. “The culture we’ve built here, the people, the players—this is where I want to be. The rivalry means everything, and I’d rather be on the right side of it.”

Akina’s heartfelt words resonated deeply with Longhorns fans, who praised his dedication to the program and his understanding of what the Red River Rivalry represents.

    A Defensive Mastermind

Since joining the Longhorns, Akina has played a pivotal role in elevating Texas’ defensive performance, particularly in the secondary. Under his guidance, Texas has consistently boasted one of the most formidable passing defenses in the Big 12, producing NFL-caliber talent and creating game-changing moments that have defined the team’s success.

His expertise extends beyond the X’s and O’s—Akina is also revered as a mentor who develops players both on and off the field. His leadership and vision have been integral to Texas’ recent resurgence under head coach Steve Sarkisian.

    Winning Hearts and Loyalty

Akina’s decision to stay with the Longhorns has endeared him even further to fans, alumni, and players. Defensive back Jaden Lucas shared, “Coach Akina isn’t just a coach—he’s a leader, a mentor, and someone who genuinely cares about us as people. This decision shows his heart is truly with Texas.”

    Looking Ahead

Akina’s choice to remain in Austin solidifies Texas’ coaching stability as the team gears up for its highly anticipated move to the SEC. With his expertise and commitment, the Longhorns are well-positioned to compete at the highest level.

In a time when money often speaks the loudest, Duane Akina’s decision is a reminder of the power of loyalty, tradition, and the love of the game. For the Longhorn faithful, it’s one more reason to believe that Texas is truly back. 🤘🏈
