In a stunning act of Hokie pride and generosity, Virginia Tech football legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bruce Smith has raised the bar for collegiate athletics transportation, donating two state-of-the-art luxury buses to his alma mater. Nicknamed “The Rolling Sandman” and “Hokie Express,” the buses are already turning heads and fueling championship dreams across the campus.
“These buses aren’t just vehicles,” said Smith at a lively unveiling ceremony outside Lane Stadium. “They’re a symbol of excellence, pride, and a reminder to every player that champions travel in style — and with purpose.”
Each bus, custom-designed in maroon and orange with holographic chrome finishes and HokieBird graphics, features an interior that rivals an NFL locker room. With massaging leather seats, 5G-enabled film rooms, personalized lockers, ambient lighting, high-def touchscreen panels, and even an on-board chef’s galley, the buses are built for more than travel — they’re designed for transformation.
“I want these young men to feel what it means to be a Hokie the moment they step on board,” Smith said. “This isn’t just about getting from point A to point B. It’s about walking into every game knowing you’re part of something elite.”
Coach Brent Pry couldn’t hide his excitement. “We’ve talked about building a championship culture — this is it, rolling down the highway,” he said. “Bruce’s gift is monumental. Our players are fired up.”
Players got a first ride following Tuesday’s practice, and reactions ranged from disbelief to inspiration. “It feels like we just signed an NFL contract,” said linebacker Keli Lawson. “Bruce Smith didn’t just talk legacy — he showed it.”
The buses are set to be used for in-state games, community outreach events, and recruiting visits. According to VT Athletics, they also plan to open the “Rolling Sandman” for public tours during homecoming weekend.
“This is what it means to be a Hokie,” said Smith, beaming. “Legacy. Loyalty. And doing it all with class.”
As the sun set over the New River Valley, one thing was clear: when the Rolling Sandman comes through, everyone knows — game on.
