In a historic and heartfelt gesture, Pro Football Hall of Famer and Virginia Tech icon Bruce Smith has donated a staggering $12.2 million to support the construction of a new state-of-the-art football stadium for Virginia Tech. The contribution marks one of the largest single donations ever made to the university’s athletics program.
Standing before a packed crowd at Lane Stadium alongside Head Coach Brent Pry and university officials, Smith spoke with deep emotion about his lifelong connection to Virginia and his alma mater.
“Virginia is home. No matter where football took me — from Buffalo to Canton — the pride of being a Hokie never left me,” Smith declared. “This isn’t just about building a stadium. It’s about building a future. A future where the next generation of young men can chase their dreams right here in Blacksburg, with the best facilities, the best coaching, and the spirit of Hokie Nation behind them.”
Coach Brent Pry, who has revitalized the Hokies football program since taking the reins, praised the legendary defensive end not just for his financial contribution, but for his ongoing mentorship and leadership.
“Bruce has always been a force — on and off the field,” Pry said. “His commitment today shows what it means to be a true Hokie. This gift will transform our program and help us compete at the highest level for years to come.”
The new stadium project, which is estimated to cost over $150 million, will include a new indoor training complex, expanded locker rooms, high-performance recovery suites, and a fan experience center designed to elevate game-day excitement. Smith’s donation will fund the stadium’s entrance plaza, which will be named the Bruce Smith Legacy Gateway in his honor.
University President Dr. Timothy Sands hailed the donation as a “defining moment” in the school’s athletic history.
“Bruce Smith’s generosity speaks volumes about the enduring bond between our alumni and this institution. His legacy now extends beyond records and accolades — it lives in the very foundation of what we are building.”
With construction set to begin in early 2026, Hokie fans across the country are already buzzing with anticipation. For Bruce Smith, the message was clear: “This is my way of giving back to the place that gave me everything. Let’s build something great — together.”
