In a move that has Volunteers fans buzzing with excitement and nostalgia, former Tennessee star quarterback Joshua Dobbs is making a triumphant return to Rocky Top—this time, not under center, but on the sidelines. Head Coach Josh Heupel announced the news Friday morning: Dobbs is rejoining the Tennessee football family as a Special Assistant Coach, marking a full-circle moment for one of the most beloved players in recent program history.
Dubbed “Rocket Man” during his playing days for his brilliance on the field and in the classroom (Dobbs famously majored in aerospace engineering), the dual-threat quarterback became a fan favorite not just for his electrifying plays, but for his poise, leadership, and relentless work ethic. Now, after carving out a journeyman career in the NFL—most recently making headlines for a heroic midseason performance with the Minnesota Vikings—Dobbs is coming home.
“Tennessee is where I grew up as a man, a player, and a leader,” Dobbs said in a heartfelt statement released by the university. “I’m honored to come back and help shape the next generation of Vols. Rocky Top is forever.”
His return is more than symbolic. As Special Assistant Coach, Dobbs will work closely with the offensive staff, particularly in mentoring quarterbacks—a role for which he is uniquely qualified. Known for his intelligence and calm under pressure, Dobbs is expected to bring not just insight, but inspiration to a Tennessee program on the rise.
Head Coach Josh Heupel, who has revitalized the Vols in recent seasons, called Dobbs’ return a “game-changer.”
“Josh understands this place, the expectations, and what it takes to lead,” Heupel said. “He’s walked the walk, and his presence will elevate our entire program.”
Fans remember Dobbs for legendary performances: the last-second Hail Mary to beat Georgia in 2016, the dazzling comebacks, the fearless runs into the end zone. But it’s his legacy of resilience and character that cements his place in Tennessee lore. Now, he brings that same spark back to Knoxville, not as a player, but as a mentor, motivator, and model of what it means to wear the orange and white.
The Rocket Man has landed—again. And this time, he’s here to launch the next generation of Volunteers into greatness.
