— In a move that has electrified the college softball community, the University of Oklahoma announced today the appointment of former Sooners pitcher Nicole May as the new Associate Head Coach for the storied Oklahoma softball program. The decision marks a heartfelt homecoming for May, who helped lead the Sooners to multiple national titles during her collegiate playing career.
The announcement was made official during a press conference at Love’s Field, where Head Coach Patty Gasso introduced May as “a fierce competitor, an exceptional leader, and a true embodiment of what it means to wear the crimson and cream.”
May, now 24, returns to Norman after a successful two-year coaching stint as an assistant pitching coach at the University of Oregon, where she helped develop one of the top pitching staffs in the Pac-12. Known for her poise on the mound and deep knowledge of the game, May will now step into a leadership role with the Sooners, overseeing the pitching staff and contributing to recruiting and game strategy.
“I’m beyond honored and humbled to return to the place that shaped me,” May said, fighting back tears. “Oklahoma is more than a program — it’s a family. I’m ready to pour everything I have into these players and help carry on the legacy we built together.”
During her time as a student-athlete at OU from 2021 to 2024, May was a key piece of a dominant pitching rotation, finishing her career with an impressive 1.64 ERA and over 400 strikeouts. She played an integral role in three Women’s College World Series championships and was known for her fierce competitiveness and calm presence in high-stakes situations.
Gasso, who has led the Sooners to a record-setting run of success over the past decade, expressed excitement about May’s return. “Nicole brings a championship mindset and an intimate understanding of what it takes to win here. She’s walked that path. Now she’s back to help lead others through it.”
The hiring comes at a pivotal time, as the Sooners aim to rebuild after graduating several All-Americans and transitioning into a new era of leadership. May’s return has already sparked excitement among fans and alumni, who see her as both a link to past glory and a beacon for the program’s future.
Nicole May will begin her duties immediately, with fall workouts set to begin in September.
