East Lansing, MI — In a massive recruiting victory for Tom Izzo and Michigan State, the Spartans have landed a commitment from 7-foot-tall five-star big man Dominic “DJ” Rawlins, the No. 27 overall player in the 2025 recruiting class. The Phoenix, Arizona native announced his decision via social media on Tuesday afternoon, choosing the Spartans over heavy offers from Arizona, UCLA, Baylor, and Kansas.
The commitment marks one of the biggest recruiting wins of the offseason for Michigan State and further cements Izzo’s program as a national contender heading into the 2025–26 season.
A Towering Talent with Versatility
Rawlins, a dominant force at both ends of the floor, averaged 18.5 points, 11.2 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game during his senior year at Desert Vista High School. He’s known not just for his elite shot-blocking ability, but also for his soft hands, fluid footwork, and a developing jump shot that makes him a threat from mid-range and beyond.
Recruiting analysts have praised Rawlins for his high basketball IQ and relentless motor, traits that align well with Michigan State’s gritty, team-first culture.
“DJ is a true difference-maker in the paint,” said 247Sports analyst Jerry Meyer. “He alters the game defensively and is a rare big who runs the floor like a guard.”
Why Michigan State?
In his commitment statement, Rawlins pointed to the Spartans’ tradition, Tom Izzo’s Hall of Fame reputation, and the family atmosphere in East Lansing.
“It just felt right,” Rawlins said. “Coach Izzo believes in me, and I believe in what they’re building. I want to be a part of something special and compete at the highest level. Michigan State is home.”
The commitment adds to a top-tier 2025 class for MSU and brings Izzo another dynamic post player who could see early playing time. Rawlins is expected to anchor the interior on both ends and provide the rim protection and toughness that has long defined the Spartans’ elite defenses.
Spartan Nation Celebrates
Michigan State fans took to social media in waves of celebration, welcoming the Arizona product with open arms.
“This is the kind of recruit that shifts the season before it even starts,” one fan wrote. “Let’s go, DJ!”
With the addition of DJ Rawlins, Spartan basketball’s future just got a whole lot taller, tougher, and brighter. Welcome to East Lansing, big man—your legacy starts now. 💚🏀
