In a major development for the 2026 college football recruiting cycle, 4-star wide receiver Malik Johnson has officially narrowed his list of schools to four — with Virginia Tech earning a spot among the finalists. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound standout from Buford High School (GA) is one of the top offensive playmakers in the Southeast and has been on the radar of Power Five programs since his sophomore year.
Johnson, ranked the No. 18 wide receiver in the country and No. 112 overall prospect by 247Sports Composite, announced his final four via a video posted to his social media accounts Wednesday night. The final list includes Virginia Tech, Georgia, Tennessee, and USC.
“I want to thank every school that’s recruited me and believed in my talent,” Johnson said in the video. “After a lot of thought, prayers, and long talks with my family, I’ve decided to focus on these four amazing programs as I get ready to make my final decision.”
Sources close to Johnson’s recruitment say Virginia Tech has made a serious impression over the last six months, thanks in large part to wide receivers coach Fontel Mines and head coach Brent Pry. Johnson visited Blacksburg for the Hokies’ spring game in April and came away impressed by the atmosphere, facilities, and family-oriented culture.
“They’re building something special in Blacksburg,” Johnson told reporters after his visit. “Coach Mines keeps it real with me. He sees me as a guy who could come in and make an early impact. I really felt at home.”
While Georgia and Tennessee are considered regional favorites, USC has made a strong national push under head coach Lincoln Riley, who’s known for developing elite wideouts.
Johnson plans to announce his commitment on August 10, his mother’s birthday — a date he says holds personal significance. Until then, he will reportedly take one more unofficial visit to Tennessee and possibly attend Virginia Tech’s “Blacksburg Bash” at the end of July.
The Hokies, coming off an 8-5 season and looking to take the next step under Pry, see Johnson as a cornerstone for their 2026 offensive class. Landing him would be one of the biggest recruiting wins of the new era in Hokies football.
Fans won’t have to wait long to find out where this explosive playmaker is headed. All eyes are now on August.
