EAST LANSING, MI — July 3, 2025 — In a historic and euphoric crescendo, the Michigan State University Marching Band has been officially crowned the No. 1 marching band in the world, according to an international panel organized by CBS Arts & Culture, the World Music Federation, and the Global Performing Arts Council.
The Spartans’ symphonic triumph places them at the pinnacle of global marching band excellence, surpassing elite collegiate and professional ensembles from across North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond. Judges praised the band’s technical mastery, artistic innovation, and emotional storytelling—elements that have long defined the MSU Marching Band’s signature performances.

More than just a musical ensemble, the Spartan Marching Band (SMB) is now a symbol of creative excellence and global inspiration. Their 2024–25 performance season was highlighted by a breathtaking halftime show titled “Voices of Victory,” which wove together powerful original compositions, complex drill formations, and emotional tributes to global unity, student resilience, and Michigan’s cultural legacy.
“This isn’t just about being the loudest or the fastest — it’s about playing from the soul,” said Dr. David Thornton, Director of the Spartan Marching Band. “Every note we play is for Michigan State, for our community, and for a better world.”

Alumni and students gathered at the Beaumont Tower as news broke, erupting into cheers as green and white confetti filled the air.
