EAST LANSING, MI — July 3, 2025 — While flashier programs grab headlines with high-profile transfers and one-season wonders, the Michigan State Spartans Track & Field team is taking a different route — one built on grit, consistency, and long-term vision. Slowly but surely, MSU has transformed into one of the most respected and well-rounded track & field programs in the nation.
This evolution didn’t happen overnight. Under the leadership of head coach Latasha Henderson, now in her fifth season, the Spartans have prioritized development, team culture, and a relentless work ethic that has paid off across all event groups. From sprints to distance, throws to jumps, MSU is no longer just competing — they’re contending.
Built from the Ground Up
The foundation of the Spartans’ rise has been laid by a commitment to holistic athlete development. MSU athletes are not only getting faster and stronger, but smarter, tougher, and more technically sound.
“We’re not just chasing medals — we’re chasing growth,” said Coach Henderson. “We want our athletes to leave here better than they came, in every way.”
And that growth is showing up on the national stage.
Results That Speak Volumes
In the 2024–25 season alone, Michigan State:
- Produced three Big Ten champions
- Broke five school records
- Sent nine athletes to the NCAA Championships
- Saw its women’s 4x100m relay squad finish 4th nationally
- Had multiple athletes qualify for the U.S. Olympic Trials
Athletes like Jalen Moore, a breakout 400m sprinter, and Ava Richardson, a pole vault phenom, have become faces of the program. Yet, the real strength lies in the team’s depth and diversity of talent.
Culture Is the Difference
At the heart of it all is a team culture built on trust, unity, and Spartan pride. The coaching staff has created an environment where athletes push each other daily, celebrate each other’s wins, and embrace the grind.
That culture has also attracted one of the strongest recruiting classes in recent memory, with national-level high school talent committing to MSU in multiple events.
Looking Ahead
As other programs burn bright and fast, Michigan State is building something meant to last. They may not make noise with flashy headlines, but their performance on the track speaks volumes.
In East Lansing, the Spartans are running a quiet revolution — and the finish line is lined with championships.
