EAST LANSING, MI — July 3, 2025 — In a landmark moment for Michigan State Track & Field, junior distance runner Kate O’Connor has earned First-Team All-American honors in the 3000m steeplechase, becoming the first Spartan to do so in the event since 2015.
O’Connor delivered a thrilling performance at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, crossing the finish line with a personal-best time of 9:49.86, which placed her 6th overall in a highly competitive national final. With a masterful blend of endurance, timing, and technical precision over the barriers and water jumps, Kate solidified her name among the nation’s elite.
A Steeplechase Standout
Originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan, O’Connor has been steadily climbing the national ranks over the past two seasons. But this year marked a massive leap forward. After placing top-three at the Big Ten Championships and setting multiple personal bests throughout the regular season, she peaked at the perfect time — showing grit and confidence in the national spotlight.
“Kate’s progression this season has been phenomenal,” said MSU Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Lisa Breznau. “She’s an incredibly disciplined and humble athlete who’s put in the work every single day. To become a First-Team All-American is a testament to her persistence, belief, and Spartan toughness.”
A Long-Awaited Return to Steeplechase Glory
The last Michigan State athlete to earn First-Team All-American honors in the steeplechase was Leah O’Connor in 2015, who went on to represent the U.S. on the international stage. Kate’s achievement rekindles MSU’s rich tradition in the event and signals a new era of Spartan strength in distance running.
Balancing Brilliance
Off the track, Kate is a standout in the classroom as well. A Biochemistry major, she has earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and is widely respected for her leadership and mentorship within the team.
With her junior season ending on such a high note, all eyes now turn to 2026 — where Kate will return as a favorite to contend once again on the national stage.
Congratulations, Kate — Spartan history has a new chapter, and it’s yours.
