In a moment that will forever echo through the halls of Spartan athletics, Michigan State University’s Kate O’Connor blazed her way into the record books, becoming MSU’s first First-Team All-American in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase since 2015. With relentless determination and an unbreakable Spartan spirit, O’Connor crossed the finish line at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, solidifying her place among the elite.
Clocking a personal-best time of 9:42.86, O’Connor didn’t just run a race—she ran into history. From the opening gun, it was clear she came to compete, leaping over barriers and splashing through water pits with the grace of a seasoned veteran. By the final lap, the stadium was on its feet as she surged forward, outpacing All-American veterans and proving that Michigan State is once again a force in the distance-running world.
“I knew this was bigger than just me,” O’Connor said after the race, tears of joy in her eyes. “I’ve trained for years dreaming of this moment—not just to be among the best, but to bring that pride back to MSU. This is for every Spartan who ever believed.”
The last MSU athlete to achieve First-Team All-American status in the steeplechase was Leah O’Connor—no relation—who dominated the event a decade ago. Now, Kate O’Connor carries the torch, reigniting a tradition of excellence in East Lansing.
“She’s one of the most disciplined and fearless athletes I’ve ever coached,” said Head Coach Lisa Breznau. “Kate didn’t just make it to nationals—she belonged there. And today, she showed the nation what it means to be a Spartan.”
O’Connor’s journey to the top has been anything but easy. Overcoming injuries, balancing a rigorous academic load, and competing in one of track and field’s most grueling events, she exemplifies the grit and heart that define Spartan athletics.
As she stood on the podium draped in Spartan green, the chant of “Go Green! Go White!” roared through Hayward Field, echoing a legacy reborn.
Kate O’Connor isn’t just a First-Team All-American—she’s a symbol of resurgence, resilience, and the future of MSU track and field.
Forever Spartan. First-Team for life.
