EAST LANSING, MI — July 3, 2025 — In a testament to integrity, leadership, and true Spartan spirit, Michigan State Track & Field and Cross Country standout Josh DeVries has been named the recipient of the 2025 Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award. This prestigious honor is presented annually to one student-athlete from each Big Ten institution who best exemplifies sportsmanship, ethical behavior, and respect for opponents and teammates alike.
DeVries, a senior thrower specializing in the hammer and weight throw, has been a model of character throughout his collegiate career. While he’s built a strong athletic resume — including multiple top finishes in Big Ten competition — it’s his behavior off the field and during competition that set him apart and earned him one of the conference’s highest honors.
Leading with Humility and Heart
Known for his calm demeanor, tireless work ethic, and constant encouragement of teammates, DeVries has built a reputation as a quiet leader. Whether cheering on fellow Spartans at meets or lending a hand to younger athletes during training, his presence is felt far beyond the throwing circle.
“Josh embodies everything we strive for in our program,” said Michigan State Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Lisa Breznau. “He’s a fierce competitor, but he never loses sight of the bigger picture — teamwork, respect, and love for the sport. This honor couldn’t go to a more deserving individual.”

Off the field, DeVries has maintained a strong academic record while majoring in Kinesiology. He’s also been involved in multiple community service efforts, including youth track clinics and local school outreach initiatives in the East Lansing area.
Teammates frequently describe him as “the heartbeat” of the team — someone who puts people first, always has a kind word to share, and keeps team morale high regardless of the result.
