LEXINGTON, KY / BROOKLYN, NY — July 11, 2025
In a heartwarming and triumphant moment that speaks volumes of perseverance, growth, and grit, Amari Williams, the towering forward who anchored Kentucky’s frontcourt this past season, has officially been selected 46th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. The announcement came after a draft-day trade with the Orlando Magic, launching Amari into the next chapter of his remarkable basketball journey.
Born and raised in Nottingham, England, Williams’ path to the NBA was anything but conventional. After establishing himself as a defensive powerhouse at Drexel University, where he won three consecutive CAA Defensive Player of the Year awards, Williams entered both the NCAA transfer portal and the NBA draft pool with dreams of taking his game to the highest level.
When Coach Mark Pope took over the reins at Kentucky, Williams became his first portal acquisition, and the pairing proved prophetic. Throughout the 2024-25 season, Williams delivered 10 double-doubles, provided consistent rim protection, and brought invaluable experience and composure to a young Wildcats squad. His performance played a crucial role in Kentucky’s strong campaign and deep postseason push.
Though some analysts doubted his draft chances due to limitations in offensive versatility, NBA scouts were impressed with his 7’6″ wingspan, elite rebounding, and shot-blocking instincts. His basketball IQ and mature decision-making on the court ultimately solidified his case.
Now part of a Boston Celtics team undergoing a transitional offseason, Williams may find early opportunities to contribute. The Celtics are retooling following injuries and major trades, leaving room for young talents like Amari to carve out rotational roles under head coach Joe Mazzulla, who is known for developing big men.
With Celtics stars like Jayson Tatum sidelined and Kristaps Porziņģis traded, the franchise has put its faith in fresh talent. Williams, joining fellow draftees Hugo Gonzalez and Max Shulga, will aim to impress in the NBA Summer League, where he’s expected to showcase his defensive versatility and tenacity on the glass.
From Drexel to Lexington, and now Boston—Amari Williams is living proof that dreams pay off when paired with heart, hard work, and humility.
We are all proud of you, Amari! #kentuckybasketball #GoCeltics #BigBlueForever
