LEXINGTON, KY – In a much-anticipated update regarding promising international signee Andrija Jelavić, Kentucky head coach Mark Pope shared the latest developments surrounding the forward’s arrival and participation with the Wildcats. Jelavić, a highly-touted international prospect from Croatia, has been the subject of much buzz among Big Blue Nation, and Coach Pope’s recent comments offer both clarity and cautious optimism.
Speaking to the media during summer practice, Pope revealed that a major hurdle has been cleared in the form of academic transcript approval.
“The status right now is that we got transcripts, he just finished classes, which is awesome,” Pope said. “So we have transcripts, and that part of this process is complete and now it’s going through the rest of it.”
This marks a significant step in getting Jelavić officially enrolled and ready to join the team in Lexington. However, the process isn’t entirely complete. There are still administrative and logistical steps that must be handled before he can take the court in any official capacity.
“I’m hoping he can be on campus here — I don’t know if it’s optimistic, in the next… You know, I’d love for him to be here tomorrow,” Pope added.
As of now, Jelavić is not yet in the United States and remains unable to participate in team workouts. Being an international student has presented unique challenges, particularly concerning NCAA eligibility requirements and summer school enrollment.
“He actually can’t work out with the team right now. There are a number of reasons why he wouldn’t be able to work out with the team. One of them is being an international student, first time in the States. With our summer courses, to take the required number of in-class hours was really complicated.”
Despite the delay, Coach Pope reassured fans that Jelavić is actively training back home, staying in shape, and preparing for the season. His commitment, work ethic, and potential remain high, and Pope is confident the freshman will make a strong impact once he arrives.
“He’s doing great. He’s training back home and I expect him to come and have a great impact.”
As Kentucky’s new-look roster continues to gel this summer, the addition of Jelavić could be a critical piece in Pope’s championship vision. Big Blue Nation awaits his arrival with great excitement and anticipation.
