The announcement came as part of a joint fan-voted and panel-reviewed competition conducted by ESPN, College GameDay, and the Mascot Hall of Fame, celebrating the most powerful and culturally resonant mascots in NCAA football history.
Bevo, the mighty Longhorn steer who has led Texas teams onto the field since 1916, captured hearts and headlines with his ferocious gaze, regal presence, and Texas-tough attitude. From his commanding appearances at the Red River Rivalry to his unshakable calm during some of the game’s most intense moments, Bevo embodies the grit, grandeur, and pride of the University of Texas like no other.
“Bevo doesn’t just represent Texas—he is Texas,” said mascot historian Claire Rodgers. “His image, his legacy, and his sheer size make him a force to be reckoned with. He’s tradition, pride, and intimidation wrapped into one magnificent beast.”
Fans rallied behind the longhorn during the online voting campaign, which garnered over 2.1 million votes. Many cited Bevo’s legendary standoffs, including his unforgettable moment facing off against UGA at the 2019 Sugar Bowl, as proof of his unrivaled persona.
While LSU’s majestic Mike the Tiger remains a fan favorite and Georgia’s UGA stands as a symbol of Southern tradition, it was Bevo’s unapologetic presence and wild Texas spirit that carried the day.
Texas Athletics released a celebratory statement:
