In a move celebrated across the sports world and beyond, Michigan State icon and NBA Hall of Famer Earvin “Magic” Johnson has officially been named one of TIME 100’s Most Influential People in Sports for 2025. The announcement, made earlier today by TIME Magazine, honors Johnson’s enduring impact on basketball, business, and social justice—cementing his status not only as a sports legend but as a transformational leader.
The magazine’s annual list recognizes figures who are shaping the future of sports and society through innovation, leadership, and influence. Johnson, now 66, continues to be a towering figure across industries. From dazzling fans on the hardwood with the Los Angeles Lakers to leading multimillion-dollar ventures and championing urban development, Magic’s journey has transcended the court.
“Magic Johnson is more than a basketball icon—he’s a visionary whose influence continues to be felt far beyond the game,” said TIME senior editor Carla Reynolds. “His legacy spans sports, business, philanthropy, and public health. He’s an embodiment of purpose-driven success.”
Born and raised in Lansing, Michigan, Johnson burst onto the national stage after leading Michigan State University to the 1979 NCAA Championship in a historic showdown against Larry Bird and Indiana State. He went on to revolutionize the NBA as the centerpiece of the Lakers’ “Showtime” era, capturing five NBA championships and three league MVP awards.
But Johnson’s most enduring contributions may have come after he retired from the game. Following his 1991 announcement that he had contracted HIV, Johnson became one of the most prominent advocates for HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention. He also built a vast business empire, investing in underserved communities and creating opportunities for countless people through Magic Johnson Enterprises.
Over the years, he has remained active in the world of sports, serving as a part-owner of several major teams—including the Los Angeles Dodgers, LAFC, and the Washington Commanders.
In response to the TIME 100 honor, Johnson tweeted:
“Humbled and honored to be named among the TIME 100 Most Influential in Sports. I’ve always believed greatness isn’t just about what you achieve, but how you uplift others along the way.”
As accolades continue to pour in, Magic Johnson remains not just a symbol of excellence in sports, but a beacon of possibility and hope—proof that true legends never stop inspiring.
