Bayern Munich are reportedly taking the growing transfer threat from Liverpool “very seriously,” as both European giants circle Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi ahead of the January window.
The Bundesliga champions have already endured a major setback from the Reds after losing out on Florian Wirtz this summer. Bayern had viewed the German playmaker as a certainty to join them, continuing their tradition of signing the Bundesliga’s brightest stars. But in a shock twist, Wirtz chose Anfield, leaving Bayern reeling and scrambling for alternatives.
That defeat pushed the Bavarians to sign Luis Díaz from Liverpool for around £65 million, closing what many thought was the final chapter of transfer battles between the two clubs. Yet, just months later, another tug-of-war appears to be brewing — and this time, it’s over Marc Guehi.
According to reports from Christian Falk, Bayern are determined to secure Guehi on a free transfer next summer when his contract with Crystal Palace expires. Under current rules, non-English clubs can approach him from January 1st, meaning Bayern are preparing to open negotiations early.
However, Liverpool remain firmly in contention. The Reds were on the brink of signing Guehi during the summer transfer window before Palace pulled the plug at the last minute. Despite that setback, Liverpool’s interest hasn’t cooled, and manager Arne Slot is keen to add defensive reinforcements after a run of injuries.
The long-term absence of Giovanni Leoni, who ruptured his ACL on debut, has intensified the Reds’ need for another top-level centre-back. Guehi, 25, fits the profile perfectly — composed on the ball, Premier League-proven, and capable of anchoring Liverpool’s evolving backline.
Bayern, however, see Guehi as a potential long-term successor to Matthijs de Ligt or Dayot Upamecano, whose futures remain uncertain. Reports suggest the Bavarians view Liverpool’s involvement as a “serious threat”, especially after being blindsided by Wirtz’s decision earlier this year.
With Real Madrid also lurking, the race for Guehi’s signature is shaping up to be one of the biggest transfer stories of 2025. For Liverpool, January could be decisive — and Bayern know all too well what happens when the Reds set their sights on a target.
