In a move that merges legacy with innovation, the University of North Carolina (UNC) has officially announced an ambitious plan to expand and redesign the iconic Dean E. Smith Center, home of Tar Heel basketball. The $180 million project aims to transform the beloved arena into a state-of-the-art basketball and entertainment complex for future generations.

The project, spearheaded by the UNC athletic department in partnership with private donors and alumni, will include major upgrades such as expanded seating capacity, cutting-edge LED technology, interactive fan zones, and a modernized locker room and training facility for players. The arena’s design will retain the classic atmosphere that honors the late legendary coach Dean Smith, while incorporating innovations to rival the finest arenas in college basketball.

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham shared his excitement during the announcement:
